Both layer transforms are already flattened, but this does not mean the object is converted to curves.
When the child layer is selected, the parent layer transform will transform the bounding box.
All these transforms can be seen in the Shape Effects panel.
So in this case, only the Convert to Curves helps

Hold Alt as well, to Deep Select into groups, composites, clipping groups, to add or remove Click Through candidates to/from current selection.

I was simply wondering at what point a stroke takes the color sample that then colors the stroke itself.
