You're comparing apples to oranges, because Xara does not offer anywhere near as many tools or features as VS does,
Here a pic of Xara Tool Button palette, with all tools avaiable

You still don’t get it. And taking things so literally every time is not a good sign. Again, just enjoy the calm interface in Xara and others and think “could we simplify something”.

Regardless of the nummer of tools a program has to offer, you don’t show them all and you show what you do show as smart and simple as you can. And that is what the context toolbar is there for, hiding and showing options in different contexts. Automatically if at all possible.

This is a tool toggle that should be available as default. Some options are secondary and can be hidden or made available more discreet. Many text labels can be hidden and a simple icon can save tons of space. It is not just about features. It is about UI design and elegance.

Customisation is nice but if the default setup is not what a majority of new users expect they have to alter the default again and again. And they don’t. It is not how you sell products nowadays. Don’t expect happy customers that will love to go the basement to look for tools again and again. They won’t. Even satisfied customers. This phrase I have heard for 30 years from customers, people and coworkers: “whow can I do that”. Sometimes I haven’t really used the program in question much.

If you think that we represent the average users, think again. They are not patient, they do not register on any forum, they do not accept reading long manuals and Usability is the biggest parameter there is together with price.

Affinity has millions of users, and far below one percent of them are on their forum. And that particular forum is cursed by a few handful of fanboys and freaks who defend whatever shortcoming Affinity has. They big question is how many thousands of their customers that struggle in silence at home or uninstall during the Affinity trial and how many do with vectorstyler.

Thinking back I uninstalled countless programs during my career because I knew after a number of observations that if I see this in a program, it will never improve, simply because if that’s how it looks in version 2 or 3, the company will never get it right.

And that is why big competitors have presets for different workflows, some simple. Even though the programs have a gazillion options. Because people do not pay for complexity and losing hours of their life.

I think everyone made a good point about having the UI both simplified but also providing for power users.

This requires a review and redesign of some of the UI elements, most notably the context panel.
But lets keep in mind that customization will always be on the menu 🙂

I think a UI overhaul should be prioritized in the roadmap, after the features of 1.2 are available.

  • @Ingolf

For the fact that, as you say, "I still don't get it".
I think it's nice that you're still trying to explain it to me.

Well, I just see myself as a normal user and not as a gui designer.
So I take the liberty to to make suggestions that a professional
does not make. Simply out of my own interest and will do so
    in the future.

Whether they are implemented or not is anyway not my decision.

  • I was targeting the general feedback about hiding a central tool switch and that Xara is clean because of fewer feature, not so much your feedback about Xara and customization etc. 🙂

Anyway, of course your feedback is always welcome, I was just disagreeing loudly with statements from previous posts. 🙂

Customizations is great and always a incredible part of VS, but I am rasing the flag that op-ins (that sometimes changes some program behavior that drives some nuts for the better) will probably never be discovered by a major, major part of the people who use or try VS.

No further comments on this topic from me - I think we all know where we all stand.

  • @Ingolf

No problem. I understood that you hold up the flag
    and get along with it.

Find your posts always interesting, just sometimes a bit too vehemently.

  • Well, that's me for better or worse. Life is not a tea party, as a wise man taught me. That's what got me out of the gray mass in life and at work. And there's no doubt about what I mean. I simply don't bother hiding opinions or passion anymore. If there's one thing I can't stand, it's the morbidly neutral tone everyone keeps in fear of violations these years.

For the same reason, my favourite place is Italy, where you can say hell no or hell yes out loud - quite naturally. And it goes both ways among those people. It is pure mental freedom.

  • @Ingolf

Thank you for your open words. I understand your attitude a little better now
and can say that I like people who share their feelings openly.

I just feel a little overwhelmed by something like this from time to time. Maybe because I am a sensitive guy.

I like Italy too. Had one of my best vacations in Italy. I loved the nightlife on the streets
and the body language of the people 🙂 and not to forget the food and cultural things.

I saw Michelangleos Piaeta Sculpture in St. Peter's Basilica and was very deeply impressed.

I am used to it from real life - very often I am the receiver of hailstorms of words and reactions - one gets used to it. And yes being sensive perhaps adds to a reaction as well - we are probably all sensitive on the internet, so hard to guess what lies behind text on a screen.

Good stuff. You will never run out of options and impressions in Italy. And great coffee everywhere as in EVERYWHERE.

    Will correct it 🙂
