But I am not very familiar with AI.
Have always avoided it, didn't like the user interface.

Coming from Coreldraw, Xara Graphics Designer
but i know more or less many other vector graphic programs
and vector graphic tools

Create a group, and then select an Object -> Composite -> mode on the group.

In this case double click isolation works.

This is not needed, and if isolated, the composite shape mode will not work for the top object shape.
