Keyboard shortcuts explanation "Em space" and "En Space"

Inside the keyboard shortcuts in the text editor section, what do the "Em space" and "En Space" do?

@Boldline It inserts an Em or En Space in text.

@VectorStyler Not sure why the shortcut is not displayed in the Text menu > Insert Character.

@b77 thanks for explaining. I'd never heard of that before. Is the purpose to have control over spacing? I'm trying to understand how it would be useful
The "Shift-command-n" brings up a file menu for me to open a file... So that's not working right for me
