Default path brush size - too large?

Is there a default set size the path brush and eraser are set to? Is there a way to adjust that default setting? because it seems with every new project, the size of the brush always defaults to 46pts which seems quite large for a standard file size I use. I always find myself having to stop to depress the left bracket key and reduce the size right away, the firs time I use it per new document. 20pts is a more common size in my view, but I'm open to what others think.
