Repeated clicking does not drill down to lower objects to select

Am I correct in remembering that the transform tool would select the next object down in the hierarchy of objects when clicked again?
I have an example of a softball where the blue outline and laces sit overtop the yellow ball. I cannot find a way to select the yellow ball fill sitting under the blue - each time I click on it, I only get the blue selected. I tried the other selection tool options but they did not do it either.
Am i missing something?

@Boldline Only if double clicked for isolation. Or with Option+Click to select an object inside a group.
