        @Boldline Did you Option-click the button? Option-click creates a composite object from two or more shapes.

        MacBook Pro (Intel) running Monterey 12.6.4

          @b77 I didn't think so, but I will keep an eye out for when it happens again. Now I know the blue background represents a composite object from two or more shapes. - thanks!

            It could be that the selected group has the boolean operation applied to it (same as in AI), or a composite shape is selected that uses the highlighted boolean op.
            Both are non-destructive, so it is indicated as the active shape composition mode.
