      If I want to use the center point of another object to make an array of a duplicated second shape, how would I align the red dot accurately? I tried this by using guides to get close :

      I tried a few other ways, for example grabbing the large circle and the small green spime, but that moves the red dot to the center of those two objects....

        @Boldline I would simply enable 'Snap to Objects' so that the pivot of the triangle shape snaps to the center of the big circle, then duplicate the triangle around the circle with rotate-with-copy (Option-rotate).

        MacBook Pro (Intel) running Monterey 12.6.4
