Brush Format Options

I'm playing with the Brush and discovering that I'm not able to constrain to straight lines.
Maybe I'm missing something.
What I would like to suggest is,

an ability to convert from pen or Bezier to Brush
-
An extra toolset that uses comparable shapes (star, ellipse etc), but for brushes, or
-
An ability to convert such shapes to Brush format.
It seems that the Brush format is constricted to working only in it's confined format which makes attempting to either edit a brush to a shape such as a star, tedious. Being able to either pick from a set of shapes intended to work as / with brushes or having the ability to convert from pen / bezier to Brush would be an exceptional improvement to modeling in the Brush format in that regard.

@fewerjunk Applying a brush to any shape (draw with the Pencil, or any other tool) should be simple from the "Brushes" panel. Set the Width and select a brush type from the drop down list (while the object is selected).
