Selecting Paths and Objects

Hello: I am totally new to VS and this forum, and I come with a background of using mostly AD and InkScape.
Foremost, what a great community and amazing product!
My question: Should selecting an object or path not select it on the canvas? It is perplexing when the selected canvas and layer differ. I have to assume that there is a setting that can bind them together, which I cannot find. Otherwise, could this be a bug to report or a feature that should be requested?

Oh! To answer my own question: The circular radio button has to be checked. This is actually way better than always having the object selection automatically change!

Yes, the selection in the Layers panel and on the canvas are different. These can be synchronized (Layers panel menu -> Panel Options) if needed.
This mode (similar to how it is done in Adobe Illustrator) enables some features between the canvas and Layers panel.
