Alternative Option to Knife Tool Break Apart for objects with a negative space Needed

Could "Separate Path" also be used to break apart shapes cut with the knife tool? I was looking in the documentation and it says, "Use the Break Apart command to separate the object into multiple path objects." but what about cases like the image attached where there are negative spaces?

I understand I could just click on "Break Apart", but that means multiple steps to re-cut out the negative shapes. I seem to remember there was an issue with this before, I think there was an option to just have the knife to automatically break apart but that caused other issues

how about create a little curve/stroke
and use Boolean "Divide" ?

I had tried "separate path" and for me, it didn't change anything
