How do I turn off stroke scaling for objects pasted into a VS document? I have scale strokes and effects on by default in my document and in my document setup. What do I do when I import an item and try to scale it and it does not abide by that rule?

@Subpath that was it! thank you. It was set to "unchecked" in the right-click menu of Appearance panel. I will have to remember that for next time. It's not the easiest thing to look for!

you're welcome, I'm glad it was helpful
perhaps it's possible to create an Action out of it?
            I agree, it's a bit hidden
