If document file settings are modified during file use to save history, Can file be saved with current history including whatever was previously recorded during that open session

I was working on a file I had made a few weeks ago and ran into a bug issue. I realized in the file setup, that all the options to save hisotry and such were turned off. I turned them on and then saved the file to send to the developer - thinking all the edits and issues were saved in the history. I opened the file up again later and all the history was gone.
I assumed that VS would save the history steps along with the file once I had set the save history features in the document settings. Seems it will only save future steps?
Can this be changed to have it include whatever was previously recorded during that open session? -
@Boldline The history of changes made before turning the option on might be lost.
