      @Boldline

      Why don't you just right-click?
      That's what I'm doing.

The following is an overview of my environment.
I can get into typing position rather quickly by right-clicking.

          MacOS 10.15.7
          Preferences > Mouse
          Sub button click: check on

The mouse is a Magic Mouse, circa 2011.

@Boldline The way it supposed to work (and works here): select the layer name (light blue highlight). Without moving the mouse away, click on the layer name again. Then the editing is opened.

The important thing is that between the first and the second click, the mouse is not moved away from the name.

@vectoradmin Since renaming is similar to renaming items in the Finder (two successive clicks), I would also make it possible to rename by selecting the item then pressing Return.

@vectoradmin Sorry, but it doesn't work on latest beta.
Overall, I have the feeling that something is wrong with my layers panel at times.
When I click on a layer's name while CTRL is pressed down :

                  • other layers disappear,
                  • adding new layers becomes impossible ,
                  • bottom bar is inactive,
                  • layer that left deselect automaticly after clicking on it

In a new document works fine.

@encart No need for CTRL for renaming. That will isolate the layer.

@vectoradmin Yes, your instructions are clear for me but I can't rename it anyway.
I mentioned CTRL because it cause problems with Layers panel. The problem is present in latest build as well.

@encart I just checked this on Windows, and the renaming in the Layer panel should work using two clicks (not a double click).
In the new build, the Return key should also open the layer name editing (just after the layer name is selected).

Some other options to rename the layer:

                        • double click on the layer name in the panel.
                        • Object menu -> Layer Options.

I will try to replicate this problem, but so far could not. Are you using a tablet or some touch device? Also: there are other panels with lists where things can be renamed (Panels -> Canvas & Artboard, or Panels-> Styles -> Styles). Can you rename items there (using the same two click step)?

@vectoradmin I'm using only mouse now.
In Canvas&Artboard / Styles panel both methods are working - two clicks & Return key.
Non of them work in Layers panel.
