Outline of a Variable-Width Path

I used the Width Tool on a path to make one end thinner and the other end thicker. Is there any way to view its outline without using the Expand Stroke function? A hairline effect will suffice.

@monsterfox it is possible to add an effect in the Appearance panel menu "Expand Stroke":
- add the effect, and move it above the stroke
- then add a stroke to outline the result
attached the example file. The original curve remains editable.
