      When I click in the color panel and make a fill or stroke color "empty of color" - the box turns gray. This does not change again until I go use the pen tool or something like it on the canvas - and then it switches to the white box with red line through it. This threw me off at first because I thought for a moment that the color was now gray...
      could the switch to a white box with red line occur as soon as the option is selected in the color panel?

          @Boldline.

          Good news. You are not losing your mind. I thought it was happening to me earlier too, but started to mess around with some other stuff and as soon as I saw your post, it reminded to look into it again.

          And it's not just Gray. Its' BLACK if done with the Stroke.

          For me, with nothing selected, and the Fill Icon in the FORWARD position, clicking on None makes the FILL Icon turn Gray.

          If the Stroke Icon is in the front/forward position (in front of the Fill Icon), and you click None Icon, it turn the Stroke Icon BLACK.
