Adding a new style with a selected paragraph leaves the font family field blank

When I try to add a new style with a selected paragraph and then apply it the type change oddly. No font family to be seen. Cannot figure out what happens. All over VS font system is very confusing.

@Raaskot Was there a character style associated with the selected text?
If applying the paragraph style also selects a font, then this might be a display issue pnly.
I will try to sort this out. -

Character Style interference? Nope, not according this example ...!
