This falls under UX issue rather than a bug, but not sure where the post belongs, so posting it in bugs since it is a "issue" of sorts.

When I update the Stroke dialog, say I'm expecting to be able to load a style and then use the Pencil tool to draw with that loaded style.

Instead, the stroke reverts back to the previous state. I realize that this is intended behavior. But perhaps the Stroke dialog should be inactive if it's not serving the purpose to update Objects?

For example, we can't create a brand new stroke using what we set prior to laying down the first mark so it's wasted input by the user... it just seems odd to take input when it won't matter in the grand scheme (except to set a preset maybe...)

I hope that is clear. Here's a video of the UX I'm referring to:

@debraspicher This is actually by design. The default stroke in the Pen / Pencil tools is set to be a simple / solid stroke with all other attributes removed, only the current width is used from the panel.

I can make an option to keep using all the stroke attributes for defaults, but this will also include the width profile, stripes, alignments, and dashes.

@VectorStyler I did see that. I searched to check and saw that it was intended behavior. My thought is more whether it makes sense for the dialog to be active and adjustable if the activity isn't actually going to be registered with anything?

Ex: VS has customization options on the main panel, but then there are buried options that the user can access. So I can easily spend a few minutes or so updating the panel, only to remember/forget nothing was selected so I'll inevitably lose that setting. So it's more of a UX concern than whether it should be designed differently, if that makes sense.

Q: Is it possible to change the default stroke "on the fly"? I've checked, but I can't find it easily.

            Only the width.

@VectorStyler Just to be clear, there's no setting/menu item for overriding the default Stroke? Say we want it to remain permanently a particular setting, there's no way to create a new default?

@debraspicher Not for the stroke settings. The default for most of these is fixed to the basic stroke.
The color, width and profile can be a custom default. In Settings -> Selection, disable the "Update Default Styles" and that will keep these defaults and not update them from the selection.

But the other stroke options are not kept. I will try to improve this.
