Difficulty selecting inner shape

I appreciate the deep selector now more than before. However, here is an example where I feel like the selection options still needs to improve or I am in need of learning better how to go about using the existing tools - I'm open to that!
My goal is to select the pink vector in the middle. Most every time I try, it favors selecting the green instead, even when I zoom in close. I tried with he deep select as well and it was not easy. Is there something I need to do differently to be able to select it? [Here is a video showing my attempts](selecting the green instead, even when I zoom in close. I am wondering part of this is due to the middle green part being a combined shape? But clicking with the deep select as well does not seem to grab anything but the green. )
