When a (too) large stroke is set to inside of a closed path, the stoke should just be solid?

Yes, can replicate this. Added to the bug list.
At some extreme cases, stroke offset (and expand) might result in strange shapes.
The fix will not make it into the next build, it is a hard problem

The stroke handling has been improved in the new build, but not completely out of the woods yet. Some extreme offsets may still create strange shapes.
