Can not create symbols

I can not create symbols from objects in the current beta. I can go through all the options, but in the end, no symbol appears in the panel. I tried different views, or creating a new document, but this does not resolve the issue.
I work in High Sierra on a non-metal iMac with OpenCL/GL enabled.

It seems I can create a symbol when I use Object role > Symbol. Not sure if a symbol created in this way is different to a symbol created via the symbols panel (apart from not having to name it)

This seems to be a bug, added to the backlog.
The symbol with object role is essentially the same. In this case the symbol is linking to the object and changes on the object are automatically updated in symbol instances.

The Symbols panel has been fixed in the new build (193).
All symbols should be listed now. -
