Importing vertical text from Illustrator file not usable

Vertical text become non-text objects when importing ai.
ai 10 - become individual object per character and it's garbled. so it's unusable.
ai CS6 - empty layer -

Also it would be nice if vertical text in PDF could be imported as text.
Acrobat can import vertical text in PDF properly.
Though Illustrator converts it to non-text objects.I can send you sample AI or PDF if you want.
