undocked color panel goes away after a period of time

I'm trying to track down how and when this occurs, but if I have the color panel undocked on my screen, over time it eventually disappears and I have to go recall it again from the panel menu. I have not intentionally closed it. This happens regularly - several times a day. I would probably need to do a long recording of my workflow to find the exact time it happened, but I wanted to bring it up now so it's something being considered
