Opening AI Document with embedded PDF

This is an aside to my previous "bug" while opening an AI document.

1 If the AI document contains a PDF of a bit image scan (a common way to serve 'plans' on the internet), then when VS opens it, that scan is inverted - a black line on white back becomes white line on black back.
2 If the AI file contains exactly the same scan image, but as a JPEG (say) - it opens correctly.
3 If you open a PDF of a bit image scan - again no problem.
4 And again if you open the JPEG itself, no problem.
5 After some further tests, if you have the bit image scan as a pdf and as a jpg, the jpg shows ok, the pdf is inverted - pix attached

The issue only seems to be when the bit image file is wrapped in a PDF.
