Layer transparency preview: difference between...

If I use the panel Transparency, I can see the effect of changing the opacity slider immediately but not when I use the 'Edit' button of the layer panel. Is this by design because first I thought it was not possible... until I use -by chance- the Transparency panel.

@PatrickM All changes made in modal (blocking) views are in effect only after confirming with Ok. From panels (nonmodal), changes immediate.
But in this case check the Preview button (just above the opacity edit box) and then these changes will be shown immediately.
