Color cannot be applied to anything. Text, shapes, etc.... all white.

as @pentool mentioned, maybe you are in Outline Mode

then this Icon would be selected

in normal mode this Icon

In this Mode you should be able to apply color to a shape

@mlappy This could also be a color profile issue, that can be selected in Styles -> Color Settings
