@Ayo In the Layers panel select some objects on a layer AND select (or create) another layer.

When you do that, you can move the selected on that layer.

This is done from the Object menu > Arrange > Send into Current Layer.

@b77 Thanks. Works (sometimes), sometimes all my shapes disappear. Undo doesn't get them back.
Object menu is a weird place to get the option 'Send into Current Layer'. Should be better in layers menu.

@Ayo I would say 'Should be better also in the Layers menu'. šŸ™‚

Important organizing and sorting function. Should become much more intuitive. Selecting objects on the artboard and then click or drag (with or without the help of modifiers or extra object/target symbols) on the desired layer. No menu hassle.

@b77 Have read your withdrawn (Wait!) message.
Found the arrange options in the extended menu. Doesn't work flawlessly and objects become unselectable on the artboard. I still don't understand the double highlight codes of the layers Lightblue highlight Gray highlight Radiobutton highlight. Too complicated!

@Ayo You mean doing this outside the Layers panel?
                How it should work exactly?

I deleted my reply because it doesn't work correctly like the entry in Object menu > Arrange.

                    I don't know!
Again ; should become much more intuitive. Selecting objects on the artboard and then click or drag (with or without the help of modifiers or extra object/target symbols) on the desired layer. No menu hassle.

Freehand did it by selecting the objects and clicking then the name of the desired target layer.

AI has the tiny squares (yellow layer color square at the end of the bar) with which you can drag selected object(s), selected on the artboard or the entire contents of a layer selected with the radio button in the layer, to another layer without the need to expand the layers or digging into layers with a thousand objects.

This is actually an older discussion and/or feature request.
