[macOS] External monitor / locking dialog

This is on M3 / MacOS Sonoma 14.5. The machine is normally used with an Apple Display as external monitor.
When the MacBook is unplugged from the external monitor, VectorStyler (1.2.051) opens modal panels somewhere that is invisible and cannot be interacted with. The visible screen simply locks up, and mouse-clicks gives a "pop" sound. This behaviour must be escaped from by hitting the Esc key. I have recorded a video of this behaviour. Restarting does not help.
